📋 Quick Read: Our Service Standards

Issued from 1921 to 1935, the Peace Silver Dollar was struck to commemorate the restoration of peace following World War I. It remains the last silver dollar ever minted for circulation in the United States.

  • Designer: Anthony de Francisci, an Italian-American sculptor who won a closed competition among the nation's top designers. His wife, Teresa de Francisci, served as the model for Liberty.

  • Name: Named the "Peace Dollar" due to the inscription "PEACE" on the reverse, symbolizing the nation's desire for global harmony.

Design Evaluation

Obverse: Goddess of Liberty

  • Design: A youthful and radiant portrait of Liberty wearing a weighted radiant tiara (resembling the rays of the Statue of Liberty).

  • Details: Unlike the rigid neoclassical designs of the past, Liberty is depicted with her mouth slightly parted and her hair wind-blown, symbolizing the vitality and "Roaring Twenties" spirit of a modernizing America.

Reverse: The Resting Eagle

  • Core Element: A majestic bald eagle perched upon a mountain crag, clutching an olive branch (the symbol of peace). The eagle gazes toward the rays of a rising sun, signaling a new dawn for the nation.

  • Inscriptions: The word "PEACE" is prominently struck at the base of the rock. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arch across the top, with the denomination "ONE DOLLAR" flanking the eagle.

Historical Significance The Peace Dollar marks the end of an era—it was the final silver coin of its size intended for daily commerce. It transition from the high-relief "Art Nouveau" style of 1921 to the functional low-relief strikes of the 1930s makes it a fascinating study of industrial evolution and post-war optimism.
